 Innovations

1. The alphabet is taught by using the names of people and places. Getting names right is very important when encountering a new culture. You will also need to know the alphabet well to be able to spell your name and your address to people (for instance, on the phone).

2. Namke provides a handy one-page reference sheet for the alphabet. Not all letters use all the accents. The French names of the accents themselves are provided. Finally, the name and spelling of punctuation characters is also provided.

3. The sounds of French section shows the international API alphabet used in Le Petit Robert dictionary to show how to pronounce the words. You cannot tell how to pronounce a French word just by looking at it.

4. The sounds of French also lets you identify quickly which sounds in the French language you need to work on improving. You will be happy to know that English speaking people only have about 4 or 5 sounds that they need to learn to get rid of their accent. Identifying these sounds early and working on them will improve your ability to speak and to understand spoken French.

5. There is a short section called Consignes. This section helps you to learn to read and understand the instructions given in French books. Teachers often mention that one of their big problems is simply that people can’t read the instructions. The words and phrases provided are a complete list (wow!) of all the words and typical phrases used in French language literacy courses in Canada. They were summarized from thousands of pages of material.

6. Compared to English, French grammar is complicated. The French grammar section is intense but it provides the grammar using complete sentences.

7. The vocabulary section is organized by the type of the word (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc). Students often have trouble understanding how words are used. By grouping the vocabulary words like this, it is much easier for students to see the patterns.

8. The vocabulary section also includes the gender and plurals for all the nouns. In French the gender (le or la) is a very important part of a word. While you are learning, see gender and plurals as part of the word, not just a little bit added on. There are no useful rules for identifying gender and plurals.

9. Verbs are tough in French. The verbs are provided by their French categories. What is nice is that all the verbs that use a category are also provided! Another innovation is using temporal verb learning (future, present, past tense) in one learning unit. The verbs are also provided in the context of complete sentences.

Conclusion : well, it’s not just about the software!.
